Hey Freelance Friends!

I made something for you. It’s quick. Slightly confronting. And it might save you a lot of time.

It’s a 5-minute quiz that helps you figure out what freelance skill you can actually use to make money. Not what sounds impressive. Not what’s trending. What you can realistically start with. Because most people don’t start freelancing for one reason:
they don’t know what to do. So they sit in that loop. Watching. Reading. Saving posts. Thinking about it. Nothing moves. This is meant to break that.

You answer a few questions, and it points you in a direction. That’s it. No overcomplication. And before you think “okay but this kind of thing is for tech people”…

I built this.

It’s the platform behind some of the world’s most-read newsletters, built for writers who want clean publishing, real growth tools, and monetisation that doesn’t feel bolted on as an afterthought. No duct tape. No fighting your software.

Freelance Forward runs on Beehiiv for a reason. It stays out of the way and lets the writing do the work.

If a newsletter is even a quiet idea at the back of your mind, this is the infrastructure part done right.

I’ve worked in business administration my whole life. I’m used to organising things, fixing processes, keeping everything running. Not building tools. Not doing anything “techy.” And yet here we are. Which should tell you something.

The gap between “I have an idea” and “this exists” is a lot smaller than you think. That’s what surprised me the most. Not just that the quiz works, but that I could actually put it together at all. And once you see that, it changes how you look at your own skills. Because if you can think through a problem, you can probably turn it into something useful. And if it’s useful, someone will pay for it. So let’s say you take the quiz and it gives you something like: “WRITER.”

Don’t go research for two weeks. Do this instead:

Turn it into a simple offer.
“I help X with Y.”

Then send 5 messages. Not perfect messages. Just clear ones. Tell people what you’re offering and ask if they need it. That’s how you start. Not with a logo. Not with a website. Not with a long plan. Just movement. That’s all this quiz is trying to push you toward.

So please, take it. And more importantly, do something with the answer.

💡 Emergent note:

When you sign up to Emergent, you get 100 free credits. That sounds like a lot, but most people burn through them quickly. The mistake is trying to “figure things out” inside Emergent itself. The AI ends up doing too much thinking, which eats your credits fast. You also need around 40 credits just to deploy your tool.

A better approach:

Plan outside first.

Use ChatGPT (or another AI) to think through your idea, structure your workflow, and generate a detailed, step-by-step prompt. Then bring that into Emergent to build.

So the real move is:

sign up → leave → plan properly → come back and execute.

Tool of the week

Emergent

This is what I used to build the quiz. If you’ve ever had an idea like “someone should make this”… this is how you just go and make it yourself. No big setup. No technical background needed.

Build something small this week. Not perfect. Just useful.
