n8n is for when you want control. It’s open-source, cheaper to scale, and a favourite for people who don’t want to be boxed in by pricing or limits. You don’t need to master all three. You need to understand what’s happening under the hood. Triggers. Actions. Logic. Data moving from A to B.
Here’s where most freelancers get it wrong. They keep learning. Watching. Saving videos. Taking notes. Feeling productive. None of that pays. Instead, do this:
Pick one tool. Not three. One.
Go on YouTube and search “automation for beginners” plus the tool name. Spend two to three hours getting the basics. Then build three real things:
A lead capture system. Form → Google Sheet → automated email response.
A client onboarding flow. Payment received → contract sent → onboarding email triggered. A content system. New post published → auto-shared to LinkedIn or stored in a content tracker. Now you have proof. Not certificates. Not notes. Proof. Package these into simple offers:
“I help small businesses respond to leads instantly so they don’t lose sales.”
“I set up client onboarding systems so you don’t chase paperwork.”
“I automate your content distribution so you stay consistent without extra work.”
You’re not selling “automation.” You’re selling time, speed, and fewer dropped balls. Start small. Charge R1,000 to R3,000 for a setup. Do it well. Get a testimonial. Refine it. Then increase.
The freelancers winning here aren’t more technical. They just crossed the line from learning to doing faster.
